Frequently Asked Questions
The specifics of therapy will depend on what brings you to counseling, but individual therapy typically consists of a one-hour session each week.An important part of the work is developing a therapeutic relationship in which you feel comfortable exploring not only what you are experiencing, but also some of the deeper reasons you may be feeling, thinking, or behaving the way you are.Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms or changing behaviors, therapy at Communio often seeks to understand and work with the underlying emotional and relational patterns that contribute to those symptoms. Because of this, sessions can be more experiential than simply talking back and forth about what happened during the week.At times, that may mean slowing down and experiencing difficult—or even positive—emotions during the session itself. When that happens, the goal is to help you understand, process, and respond to those emotions in a healthier and more integrated way.
Couples therapy at Communio is primarily informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach to couples counseling. In couples therapy, the relationship itself is considered the primary client. The goal is not to determine which partner is right or wrong, but to understand the patterns that develop between each member of the couple—especially the cycles of conflict, withdrawal, criticism, defensiveness, or disconnection that can leave both partners feeling stuck.Over time, therapy helps couples recognize these patterns, better understand the emotions and attachment needs underneath them, and develop new ways of reaching for and responding to one another. The goal is not simply to communicate more effectively, but to build a relationship that feels safer, more responsive, and more connected.
Yes. Communio Counseling is rooted in a Catholic understanding of the human person, but you do not need to be Catholic—or Christian—to receive counseling here. Clients of any religious background, as well as those who do not identify with a particular faith, are welcome.
At present, individual counseling is currently offered only through telehealth. Couples counseling is generally offered in person, as this is the preferred format for couples work at Communio. Sessions are held in downtown Steubenville. The exact address will be provided upon scheduling. Telehealth couples sessions may be available in certain circumstances when meeting in person is not practical.
Weekly sessions are generally recommended, particularly at the beginning of counseling. Meeting consistently helps maintain momentum and allows the therapeutic work to develop more effectively. There are circumstances in which meeting less frequently may be appropriate, and session frequency can be adjusted based on your needs, circumstances, and progress in therapy.
Communio Counseling currently provides telehealth counseling only to clients who are physically located in Ohio.
Communio is a private-pay practice. Remaining outside of insurance networks allows for greater privacy, more flexibility in determining the type and length of treatment, and fewer limitations imposed by insurance companies.Insurance reimbursement generally requires a mental-health diagnosis and documentation that treatment is medically necessary. It may also place restrictions on covered services or other aspects of care. Private-pay counseling allows treatment decisions to be made primarily according to your clinical needs and goals rather than the requirements of a third-party payer.Depending on your insurance plan, you may be able to seek reimbursement through out-of-network benefits. A superbill can be provided upon request for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Yes. A limited number of reduced-fee appointments are available for clients who would otherwise be unable to afford the full session fee. Availability is limited and can be discussed before beginning counseling.
